International Men’s Day: A Day to Celebrate and Reflect

Every year, on November 19th, the world comes together to mark International Men's Day. It is a celebration of what the men contribute, what problems they face, and the significance that men play in our societies.

As much as men are typically expected to be tough, strong, and unbreakable, they too have immense problems—problems which are often not seen or not spoken. International Men's Day gives time to appreciate the roles men play as fathers, brothers, sons, partners, and friends and raise awareness for issues they confront.

The Unseen Battles of Men

The world informs him from the very first step he takes that he should be strong, invincible, without fear.

He is instructed to be a defender, a sustainer, and a pillar of strength. But what the world tends to overlook is that he is human as well. He is afraid, insecure, and has doubts too. But society hardly ever allows room for his agony.

  • When the man loses his job, he is encouraged to be strong and continue.
  • When he is in emotional distress, he is urged to put on a brave face.
  • When he has issues with mental health, he is greeted with silence or stereotype.

The wars he wages are silent, but they are wars nonetheless. The world does not always query a man whether he is alright, yet it expects him to be alright nevertheless.

The Quiet Sacrifices

A father rises early before the dawn, goes to work without grumbling, and returns home weary—still managing to spend time with his children.

A brother waits patiently in the background, ready to intervene when necessary, asking for nothing in return.

A son bears the burden of expectation, working hard to bring honor to his family.

A friend hears other people's woes, and lends a listening ear and advice and encouragement, even if his own heart is heavy.

Men love without speaking, give without expectation, and suffer without wanting gratitude. But today, on International Men's Day, we need to acknowledge them, cherish them, and let them know that they also need support, love, and care.

Breaking the Silence on Men’s Mental Health

One of the biggest challenges men face today is mental health. The statistics paint a tragic picture—men are far less likely to get help for depression, anxiety, or emotional distress than women across the globe. Men's suicide rates are still shockingly high, and the stigma against men's mental health is still deeply entrenched.

Why? Because for centuries, men have been made to feel that vulnerability is a sign of weakness. That crying is not masculine. That needing help is failure.

But actual strength is shattering the silence. Real bravery is facing pain and reaching out for help. This International Men's Day, let us invite open discussion, establish safe zones, and tell men that they don't need to fight their battles alone.

Redefining Masculinity

It is time to redefine what a man is. Masculinity is not dominance, repression of feelings, or raw strength. Masculinity is gentleness, truthfulness, responsibility, and courage enough to be yourself.

A man is not strong because he never falls, but because he rises each time he falls.
A man is not courageous because he never fears, but because he faces his fears with valor.
A man is worth something not for what he does, but for who he is.

Today, let us honor all types of men—the quiet ones, the loud ones, the sensitive ones, and the ones learning to use their voices. Let us inform the world that it is acceptable to feel, to express, and to ask for help when needed.

A Message to Every Man Out There

To every man who has ever felt invisible—we see you.
To all men who have ever felt silenced—we are listening.
To all men who have ever felt undervalued—you are worth it.

You are not only a breadwinner, a protector, or a pillar. You are an individual with aspirations, a heart that throbs, and a mind craving tranquility. You are appreciated not for what you do but for yourself.

This International Men's Day, we not only celebrate men but encourage them, empower them, and enlighten them that they are never alone.
